Standard Foil

Holofoil

For spot foil covers and prints, you will need to provide two image files: a base image with your art in full color and another with only black and white (no colors or grays). This second file, known as the “underlay” file, is used to determine what parts of the art will have the foil applied to it. Black pixels will have foil, and white pixels will have no foil. For wraparound spot foil covers, you should provide either a third underlay file for the back cover, or ideally both the front and back underlay file put together as a double page spread. As with any other file you’d send us, make sure all images are in RGB color, 300 dpi, and saved as a non-layered image format (.jpg, .png, or .pdf preferred) with no transparency and 0.125 inches of bleed on all sides!

When browsing our list of holofoil options, you may notice that we offer “opaque” and “transparent” variations of certain patterns. The primary distinction between the two is that opaque holofoil is a solid layer that cannot be seen through, while transparent holofoil is a clear layer that can be seen through!

The production process is also slightly different. For opaque, the holofoil layer is applied to cardstock first, then the art is printed on top. For transparent, the art is printed on the cardstock first, then the holofoil layer is applied. The difference these processes have on the final result are best reflected in the example photos here.

Both types have their unique properties and advantages. Opaque is bold, vibrant, and shiny! There’s also more opaque patterns available, such as lava and magma. Transparent is more subtle and glossy in comparison, but still has those signature rainbow hues that make holofoil so popular! It’s a particularly great way to add a special touch of iridescence to art that is already colorful and detailed.
